Greetings to all… Here is an outline of the project and details about the materials…photos of the project will be in the reply messages directly after this topic message…just scroll down… All the measurements are very forgiving…they are only a guide…just what I used…a bit of a variance here and there won’t matter too much when you make your tree… Base…3 square pieces of 3/4” thick wood…5” x 5”, 4” x 4” and 3” x 3”…glued together…2” deep hole to fit trunk…red craft paint finish… Trunk…17” x 1/2” wood dowel…2 inch deep hole in end for top branch shaft…for texture, trunk spiral wrapped with torn strips of grocery bag painted brown…apply strips with white glue…paint trunk brown again… Brown “floral tape” could be used as an option to grocery bag wrap and may not need to be painted… “Faux Feather” Branches…Holiday Time brand “Garland Ties” from Wal-Mart…came in a pack of ten 12“ long pieces… Cut pieces to length…trim off 2” of needles at one end… One.…..7” long…5” with needles…2” no needles… Three…6” long…4” with needles…2” no needles… Four…..8” long…6” with needles…2” no needles… Five….10” long…8” with needles…2” no needles… There are other sources for similar garland ties… Berries…floral craft item…also known as “stamens“…wrap wire to branch end…secure with white glue… Assembly…start with top three branches… Wrap and bind wire tightly around branches and trunk several times…twist securely with pliers…wrap and glue paper strip to cover wire wrap area…paint brown…bend branches 90-degrees to trunk… Repeat the above step for other branches locations… Insert top branch…insert trunk in base… What’s next?…probably making small, lightweight ornaments…tin foil stars…red and white pipe cleaner candy canes…spray painted sycamore tree balls…paper doves and cardinals…jingle bells…miniature pine cones…also saw snowflakes made from single cardboard puzzle pieces… My very best regards…Howard… |

Good morning… I had an inquiry regarding making a slightly shorter version of the tree…something around 18” tall… The photo below shows the shorter trunk length with less space between the branches… The dimensions below for the “faux feather” branches also reflect a proportionate reduction… One.…..5 1/2” long…4” with needles……...1 1/2” no needles… Three…5” long……....3 1/2” with needles…1 1/2” no needles… Four…..6 1/4” long…4 3/4” with needles…1 1/2” no needles… Five…..8 ” long……...6 1/2” with needles…1 1/2” no needles… I wouldn't recommend making the base any smaller or the trunk diameter any less than 1/2”… My very best regards…Howard…

greetings to all... to get my mind off the july heat and humidity, i have been working on a scaled down version of the "faux feather tree"... i more or less followed the dimensions i posted earlier for the smaller size...and here's the result... the overall height is just under 20 inches, including the three tier wood base...i really like the reduced size and proportions... i did use brown floral tape to do the wrap on the trunk versus the brown wrapping paper i used previously... my very best regards...howard...sweltering here in north florida...
