We Wish You a Merry Christmas, from Family Christmas OnlineTM"We Wish You a Merry Christmas" is a centuries-old "wassailing song." Families or groups of friends would go around the neighborhood singing and making a good-natured threat not to stop until they were rewarded with a snack and a drink. This song is often dated to the sixteenth century, although the harmony we usually hear today could be much younger. Figgy pudding is something between a bread pudding and a custard, infused with dried fig bits, spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, and sometimes given a little rum for "flavor." Today the first verse of this song is often heard by itself, closing informal "Christmas concerts" in nursing homes, elementary schools, and other places where demanding a snack would probably be inappropriate. We wish you a merry Christmas
We all want some figgy pudding
We won't go until we get some
