Stille Nacht (Silent Night), from Family Christmas OnlineTMIn 1818 Father Joseph Mohr was an assistant at a small church in Oberndorf in what is now Austria. That Christmas, the organ was broken. Father Mohr worked with a Franz X. Gruber, the church organist, to arrange a Christmas song for guitar, using a Christmas poem he had written two years earlier. Not long after, the two men went their separate ways. But in 1925, a fellow who was hired to fix the organ found a manuscript of the song and took it to his home in the Ziller valley in Tyrol. From there, Tyrolian singing groups spread the song across the German-speaking patchwork of states that existed where Germany and Austria are today. In fact, decades passed before the origins of the song were widely known. But in the meantime, it became the world's most beloved German-language Christmas carol. Since then it has been translated into hundreds of languages and sung all over the world. Many churches of all denominations today could not imagine having a Christmas candlelight service without this song.Though Father Mohr original wrote several verses, only three are generally sung today. The original German text and the most common English version are provided below.
