Many French carols originated in the countryside, where the people felt that their way of life was much like that of the villagers and shepherds who first witnessed the coming of the King of the Jews.

It's no coincidence that French nativities often include figures of townspeople and tradesmen, just as French carols often feature shepherds and milkmaids. But from such humble origins have come some sublime expressions of praise.
